Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a vehicle monitoring system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on January 29th, 2024, published on July 31st, 2025, and assigned serial number 0246079.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of patents outlining potential new security methods for vehicles over the past few years, which could come in handy for folks that face the potential of theft on a regular basis. That list includes ideas for things like a vehicle-to-vehicle security system and a drone based security service, but continue to be followed up with new and oftentimes similar concepts. The latest is this – a vehicle monitoring system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, albeit, for a slightly different reason.
In this case, Ford proposes a system that’s designed to help owners determine who may have damaged their own vehicle when it’s sitting in a parking space, which is something that many have dealt with over the years – whether it be caused by a stray shopping cart someone didn’t put away, a door hitting another vehicle, or even vehicle-on-vehicle contact. The system would use a variety of sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication to do so, sending a signal to the appropriate vehicle when such damage occurs. Given the fact that many people tend to drive off without exchanging insurance information when these types of things happen, such an idea could prove useful, if it does wind up becoming a reality one day.
“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
