Exterior color is often a major factor in a buyer’s decision when choosing a vehicle. Ford, of course, is well aware of this – and a lot of thought goes into choosing which paint goes on which of its models.
Ford designers spend quite a bit of time when it comes to choosing and mixing new hues., which have to fit the vehicle’s vibe. For example, the colors that might look good on the Ford Super Duty may not translate well to the Ford Mustang. And if something’s in style in 2025, it might not make the 2028 color pallet, necessarily.
Ford designers consult the Worth Global Style Network (WGSN) and the New York Times while drumming up new colors for The Blue Oval’s lineup. They also attend design events, including Milan Design Week, to get a feel for color trends. Designers also head out to King of the Hammers and SEMA, too, to converse with customers and lay out future vehicle colors.
“We look at social, cultural, and economic trends,” said Alina Renoux, Director of Color & Materials at Ford. “We distill that into what would be relevant for our customers’ lifestyles, and how to communicate a story or feeling through those colors so that they create an emotional connection.”
For example, Molten Magenta – which is offered on the Ford Mustang and the Ford Mustang Mach-E – proved challenging for designers, who sought to spice up the classic Mustang red into something with a more modern feel.
“Race Red has always been a Mustang staple,” said Sarah Waston, senior designer of color and materials. “But with Molten Magenta, we introduced depth, metallic complexity, and a slightly unexpected tone – something expressive and bold yet still anchored in performance.”
She added, “We don’t just respond to trends. We are a part of shaping the conversation. Mustang will continue to lead with a bold, expressive design language that connects the emotional thrill of drivers around the world. Because while the engine makes itself heard, so does the color.”
Expanding that lineup yet again.
A way to potentially help avoid obstructions in wet weather.
Increasing a bit compared to the past couple of quarters.
A massive project, but one certainly worth undertaking.
Most companies are transitioning workers back to the office, too.
While the overall market posted a sharp increase in issues.
