Listen To The Upcoming Ford Mustang Dark Horse Boss Accelerate: Video

This past January, Ford filed to trademark “Dark Horse Boss,” signaling the potential arrival of a new pony car variant that would slot above the existing Dark Horse in the Mustang lineup. A few months later – in May – Ford Authority spotted what may very well be a prototype of the Ford Mustang Dark Horse Boss out testing, equipped with some unique features, and yet, no real camo to speak of. Now, Ford Authority has video of this potential Ford Mustang Dark Horse Boss, in which we can hear its powerplant operating under throttle.

In the short clip below, we can hear the Ford Mustang Dark Horse Boss as it accelerates past the vehicle filming it, making some rather throaty V8 sounds. It is equipped with a prototype exhaust that’s a bit, well, odd looking, but there’s no denying those glorious sounds – not to mention the pops that the pony car emits, after which we’re treated to a small jaunt before the driver makes a left turn.

Interestingly, this potential Ford Mustang Dark Horse Boss prototype wears bodywork that’s quite similar to the existing Dark Horse, but it’s equipped with dual air intakes – not the single intake present on the GT and Dark Horse. Another prototype was spotted around the same time, equipped with the same wheels as the S550-generation Mach 1, but the units present on this prototype are different.

It’s worth noting that The Blue Oval may or may not wind up using the Dark Horse Boss name for this particular model, but it does seem as if the automaker may be working on not just one, but two distinct new pony car variants, based on recent prototype sightings. Ford Authority previously spotted what could be a GT500 successor of sorts – and captured video of that model in action just yesterday.

As Ford Authority exclusively reported last May, the automaker has been mulling the idea of whether or not it will continue to use the Shelby GT500 nameplate for some time now, or perhaps go with a different name developed in-house for its next range-topping pony car – much like the current Dark Horse is already doing.

If the GT500 does make a return, as some have speculated, it makes sense that a Dark Horse Boss may also serve as a spiritual successor to the Mach 1, which itself was a bit of a performance bridge between the GT and the prior-generation GT500. It could take cues from the old Boss 302 and provide pony car fans with a more track-capable version of the Dark Horse, with beefier cooling, improved rolling stock, and other upgrades.

  • OK, now I am in disbelief. ANOTHER Mustang variant? This needs to come to a screeching halt. NOW.
