One thing that we continue to see on the collector car auction circuit is retired Blue Oval race cars, many of which were driven by professionals in the NASCAR series. Those older stock cars tend to generate a lot of interest among fans, and for good reason – who wouldn’t want to own a vehicle that was once driven by their hero? Now, those that were fans of NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace have the chance to bid on this former 2002 Ford Taurus racer that he once piloted on the track, too.
This particular Ford Taurus NASCAR racer is up for auction at Bring a Trailer, and it’s a real-deal machine that bears the chassis number PRS-025. Otherwise known as “Mad Max” by Penske Motorsports, which built the car, this Taurus had quite a lot of success in its competitive career, lasting between 2000-2002. Over that time span, Wallace piloted the Ford Taurus to wins at Michigan International Speedway in 2000 and California Speedway in 2001, as well as four top-five finishes and 10 top-10 finishes. After the 2002 season, it was retired and sold, then modified for road course use.
As it sits, this Ford Taurus is finished in blue and orange with a #2 Miller Lite/Harley-Davidson livery, Lexan windows, an adjustable rear spoiler, wind strakes, side-exit exhaust pipes, and decals mimicking real headlights and taillights, plus Bassett wheels wrapped in Hoosier slicks.
Inside, one will find an aluminum ButlerBuilt fixed seat, head restraints, a Simpson Racing harness, a Hurst shifter, a padded roll cage, a window net, a MOMO three-spoke steering wheel, AutoMeter Pro-Comp gauges, and a fire-suppression system. Power comes from a Penske Racing-built 358 cubic-inch V8, mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and the car even comes with a collection of Miller Lite Racing and Rusty Wallace memorabilia.
In addition to this Ford Taurus, we’ve seen quite a few other former NASCAR racers hit the auction block lately – a list that includes two different 2005 Taurus stock cars driven by Greg Biffle, as well as a Ford Fusion raced by Chad Chaffin.
