Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2020 Ford Escape models over an issue with reduced brake function.
The defect: in affected vehicles, the rear brake pads may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can reduce brake function in the event of a brake booster malfunction. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, “Light Vehicle Brake Systems.”
The hazards: reduced brake function can require the driver to apply more brake pedal force, and the distance required to stop the vehicle may be extended, increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.
Components: rear brake pads
Affected vehicles: select 2020 Ford Escape models produced between November 2nd, 2020, and December 22nd, 2020.
Number of vehicles affected: 13,451
The fix: dealers will replace the rear brake pads, free of charge.
Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin this month. The Ford reference number for this recall is 21C31.
