Edmunds Says Ford Maverick, Ranger Are All Buyers Need: Video

It’s no secret that the Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty are The Blue Oval’s sales champions and profit-generating machines, vehicles that Americans have gravitated toward for decades to this point. Regardless, there will always be folks that believe most people who buy full-size trucks don’t need them, even though this is America, where we’re obviously free to go out and buy/drive whatever we please. Regardless, Edmunds is just the latest to remind us that many truck shoppers could get by with a Ford Maverick or Ford Ranger just fine – at least, in their opinion.

In a recent comparison test, Edmunds pitted the Ford Maverick against the Ford Ranger, Ford F-150, and Ford F-250 Super Duty to answer a pretty simple question – how much truck does one truly need? In terms of capability, that’s a pretty easy question to answer, because each of these models offers increasing levels of max payload and towing capacity, and that’s also true of bed size and interior room.

Ultimately, Edmunds believes that we should be “honest” with ourselves in terms of “what you’re going to use your truck for.” “For most people, the Ford Maverick just gets the job done,” our host claims, “plus, it’s cheap and easy.” Then there’s the Ranger, which “will give you a little more capability, plus it’s still easy to park and load.” As for the F-150, it “does 95 percent of all truck stuff, and it butts up against what’s feasible for most folks.” Finally, the F-250 is the choice if “you need that kind of towing and hauling.”

Of course, it isn’t just Edmunds trying to convince Americans that they don’t “need” large vehicles these days – even Ford CEO Jim Farley has gone on record saying that we should “embrace” small cars, and he’s also called smaller pickups and SUVs the “sweet spot” of the market. Regardless, it’s clear that the Ford Maverick has at least enticed quite a few non-pickup owners to move into that part of the market as well, given its robust conquest data as of late.
