Future Ford Vehicles Could Utilize Magnets To Secure Doors

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a vehicle door with a multi-purpose magnetic assembly that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on April 3rd, 2024, published on October 9th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0314116.

The Ford Authority Take

Back in early 2022, Ford published a patent for a magnetic pickup bed, which is interesting in that one could theoretically use that type of feature to secure metal items like tools pretty much anywhere back there quickly and easily. Then, in mid-2023, Ford published a patent for powered doors with an ID system that could automatically open and close based on one’s distance from the vehicle. Now, this newly published patent somewhat combines those ideas with a new concept for a vehicle door with a multi-purpose magnetic assembly that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

In this case, Ford proposes using magnets in doors for multiple purposes, including reducing vibrations and noise in high wind situations, which could be achieved by a system that would automatically engage the magnets at certain speeds. Additionally, the magnets could engage when one leaves the vehicle and locks it, helping to make it more difficult for thieves to get inside. Overall, it’s an interesting way to use something that’s been around for a very long time, perhaps in new and innovative ways.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
