The Ford Authority Take

Ford has explored all sorts of interesting ideas as it pertains to the interiors of vehicles via several recent patent filings as of late. The chief design factor behind most of those ideas is to make cabins more configurable, giving owners the ability to move things around to suit their needs – and adding things like deployable tables and other features to transform them into mobile offices, too. Now, this newly published patent keeps that trend going with a new idea for interchangeable interior components that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

The concept here revolves around using a modular base inside of vehicles that could be configured in many ways. As Ford points out in the patent filing, today’s vehicles generally come with integrated components – things like multimedia, HVAC systems, instrument panels, screens, and center consoles, to name just a few. That limits one’s options in terms of configuring a vehicle interior, and as such, this particular concept could one day enable us to change those things around – even updating connector types and screens rather than having to go out and purchase a new vehicle to get those sorts of upgrades.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
