The latest, aluminum-bodied Ford F-150 full-size pickup is soon to gain a new diesel engine option, or so we hear. Now, with the emergence of spy footage from SpiedBilde depicting what certainly sounds like a Ford F-150 diesel test mule knocking away on public roads, we’re more certain of it than ever.
The aforementioned Ford F-150 diesel spy video can be found on Yahoo Autos. According to sources, powering the future Ford F-150 diesel will be a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter “Lion” V6 diesel engine – the same unit that powers the current Land Rover Range Rover Sport diesel model. In that vehicle, output stands at 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, which should be plenty of twist to tow just about anything within reason. Yahoo speculates that the Ford F-150 diesel could also receive the automaker’s new 10-speed automatic, which – combined with the half-ton pickup’s low curb weight – could lend it extraordinary fuel economy.
The Ford F-150 diesel will go toe-to-toe with Ram’s venerable 1500 EcoDiesel. That truck is also powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel, and offers an EPA-estimated 29 mpg highway. It also makes up about 20 percent of total Ram 1500 production.
