A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Ford’s design team was looking for inspiration for how to inject a bit more anger into the styling of the newly-revamped, 2018 Ford Mustang.
The design team found it in an unlikely – but sensible – place: the mask of Star Wars villain Darth Vader.
“When we were designing the new 2018 Mustang, the team wanted to make the new model look more aggressive, and one place where we found inspiration was one of the most famous screenplay villains of all time,” says Ford Design Manager Melvin Betancourt. “The angled nostrils and contours of Darth Vader’s mask became the inspiration for the Mustang’s new fog lamp scoops and front-end shape.”
The Ford Mustang / Darth Vader resemblance is the sort of thing that might not be obvious at the onset, but becomes quite apparent when you start to look for it. Interestingly, when the first images of the Mk III Ford Focus RS began circulating roughly two years ago, yours truly saw an awful lot of Anakin Skywalker’s old mask in that fascia. We wouldn’t be surprised if we learned that both performance products were, in fact, modeled somewhat after the Sith Lord’s iconic helmet.
Next, we’re hoping we can get a Darth Maul-inspired EcoSport RS. That would be awesome – right up until it’s cut in half in a Naboo hangar.
