Ford Motor Company is set to release a new update for 2016 model-year vehicles equipped with Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system, unlocking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities that had previously been absent.
Owners will have the option to update by visiting a dealership, downloading an install file to a USB drive, or applying the software upgrade through a home WiFi network. This marks the first time that Ford will enable one of its updates to be applied via WiFi.
“Our SYNC 3 software platform was designed to be easy to update so we can get our customers the latest and greatest features, [functionality] and security enhancements,” says Ford Executive Director of Connected Vehicle and Services Don Butler. “With over-the-air updates, we can deliver new features to customers in the background while they continue using their vehicles.”
Android Auto is compatible with Android-powered mobile devices with version 5.0 or higher of the operating system. Google Maps, Google Play Music, and some third-party apps are integrated into the infotainment system with on-screen projection and voice controls, as are phone and messaging functions.
Apple CarPlay works with iPhone 5 and later models with iOS 7.1 and higher. Like with Android Auto, CarPlay allows integration with the in-car infotainment system, enabling app projection on the SYNC 3 screen, and voice control via Apple’s Siri system. Beside the new software update, Apple CarPlay will require an additional USB hub upgrade from your local Ford dealer.
Telling you which states it can't be sold in.
It's a well-used example decommissioned a few years ago.
While one of its chief rivals has grown considerably.
Dropping its offerings to just six colors.
Small and mighty versus over-the-top aggressive.
