The full-size mainstream van segment, which includes passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab models, shrank seven percent to 75,233 units in Q4 2023, meaning that Ford Transit sales outperformed the segment average.
Ford Transit sales consistently reflect its leading position as a highly desirable and popular seller, absolutely commanding its competitive segment once again during Q4 2023. This is in spite of sales slipping, or being nearly flat, for the first time this past year.
FoMoCo has been able to continue navigating supply chain constraints and other issues negatively affecting its production, even ramping up production of the Transit at the Kansas City Assembly plant by adding a third shift. So the poor sales showing of the Transit could be a reflection of the full-size mainstream van segment being down as a whole this quarter, which the Transit still actually outperformed. Additionally, the E-Series posted the biggest gain among entries, helping Ford do just fine with a dominating combined 55 percent segment share, even up five percentage points over last quarter.
Ford Transit sales continue to be partially driven by the new Transit Trail variant that joined the lineup for the 2023 model year, which is an upfit-ready off-road-oriented van that is geared toward the van and outdoor life enthusiast. Order banks for this model sealed up on August 14th, 2023.

As popular as the Transit is considering sales numbers are very favorable, it doesn't hold a candle to the Mercedes Sprinter on almost every level. I drive them both extensively and will never take a Transit if the Sprinter is available, even an aging one. Those who use them both understand.
