When The Blue Oval first rolled out the Ford F-150 Lightning and E-Transit, the EV market, in general, was red hot for such types of vehicles. Things have changed a lot since then, however, and now, Ford is more focused on developing smaller, more affordable electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the next-generation Ford F-150 EV – which may or may not continue to utilize the Lighting name – has already been delayed twice. Now, it and the next-generation E-Transit have been delayed yet again.
According to Automotive News, production of both the next-generation full-size Ford EV pickup and van have been pushed back to 2028, marking yet another delay for both. Originally, the new full-size Ford EV pickup – codenamed Project T3 – was expected to enter production this year, but it has since been pushed back to 2026, 2027, and now, 2028. As for the new full-size Ford EV van, it was previously slated to enter production in 2026, and was reportedly “on track” to meet that date, previously.
“F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today’s customer needs,” a Ford spokesperson said in a statement, noting that Blue Oval employees and suppliers were informed of this news in June. “We remain focused on delivering our Ford+ plan and will be nimble in adjusting our product launch timing to meet market needs and customer demand while targeting improved profitability.”
Now, we’ll have to wait even longer to see those new models surface, though prototypes of the T3 are still expected to be built in 2027 at the BlueOval City site. “Market demand and customer orders will determine when we start making batteries at the BlueOval SK battery plant at BlueOval City,” a BlueOvalSK spokesperson said in a separate statement. Otherwise, Ford remains focused on its new low-cost EVs, including a “super affordable” mid-size pickup and a small crossover, which are slated to arrive in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
