Ford has been working on erecting several EV battery plants in recent years, most of which were designed to meet what most thought would be a booming demand for electric vehicles. That hasn’t quite panned out, prompting the automaker to scale back its production plans for those facilities and even utilize space for other purposes. Regardless, this slowdown also hasn’t dampened Ford’s plans to build even more battery plants, it seems, though they may build units for things other than vehicles.
“And we do have this license for what I would call world class, low cost, high quality LFP technology that can be used for stationary,” Lisa Drake, Ford’s vice president of Technology Platform Programs and EV Systems, said at the recent 2025 Jefferies Industrials Conference. “And we do have the ability to answer your second question to replicate the factory that we have in Marshall, Michigan. So, there’s a lot to think about there. Again, we don’t have anything that we are announcing today, and nothing specific, but it’s a very interesting space to pontificate.”
Drake is seemingly referring to plants that would build batteries for things like energy storage, which is a subject that Ford CEO Jim Farley touched on recently. With the emergence of artificial intelligence and its need for massive amounts of computing power, Ford sees this as a potentially big opportunity. Farley also recently revealed that Ford will likely repurpose the unused space in its battery plants, which could signal that it plans to get into that business as well.
As for Drake’s comments about licensing, those refer to Ford doing so with CATL’s lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. Ford licensed that tech from the China-based battery maker so that it could produce LFP packs for its EVs at the under-construction BlueOval Battery Park Michigan site, which will first be used in an as-yet-unnamed all-electric mid-size pickup.
