Ram Cancels Ford F-150 Lightning Rival, Renames EREV Pickup

The Ram 1500 REV debuted as an all-new Ford F-150 Lightning rival roughly two years ago, at which time Stellantis said that deliveries of the EV pickup were expected to begin in Q4 2024. However, the automaker later pushed that launch date back to the first half of 2025, and roughly a month later, delayed it until 2026. Earlier this year, the Ram 1500 REV was delayed yet again, this time, to summer 2027, with expectations that it would launch as a 2028 model year vehicle. Now, that won't be happening, either.

Stellantis has announced that the Ram 1500 REV has now been canceled altogether, a move that it's blaming on slow demand for all-electric pickups, in general, across North America. However, interestingly enough, the Ram 1500 name will live on, as the automaker has decided to rename the forthcoming extended range electric vehicle (EREV) version of the pickup, which was formally known as the Ramcharger.

As for the now-EREV Ram 1500 REV, it was also recently pushed to Q1 2026 due to "extending the quality validation period," according to Stellantis. It's expected to utilize a large 70.8 kWh battery pack providing 145 miles of pure EV driving range, but it’s also paired with a gas engine in the form of the 3.6L Pentastar V6, which powers a generator designed to produce electricity for the battery, as well as power the truck itself. When the battery pack gets below a certain state of charge, that gas engine kicks in to extend range.

This decision comes after Ford opted to delay its own next-generation all-electric version of the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit to 2028 amid slow demand - the third such delay for the EV pickup. In the meantime, The Blue Oval is working on developing its own range of EREV versions of several existing models, including the Ford Super Duty, along with a line of unnamed crossovers and SUVs – “its most popular and profitable vehicles” – though none of them are expected to arrive before 2027.
