This week, Ford Performance, Shelby American, and the Hertz Corporation unveiled the fruits of their latest collaboration: the 2016 Shelby GT-H Mustang. While new, this Shelby Mustang rental car is far from the first of its kind; the Hertz "Rent-a-Racer" program started all the way back in 1966, with a different sort of Shelby Mustang, dubbed the "GT350-H."
This video from Shelby American presents a brief history of the Rent-a-Racer program's roots, including that original, 1966 Shelby GT350-H Mustang, the Shelby GT-H of 2006, brought out to celebrate its 40th anniversary, and this new Shelby Mustang Hertz rental car, which coincides with the 50-year anniversary.
Unlike the 1966 original, the 2016 Shelby GT-H Mustang is not based on the high-performance GT350 variant of the pony car. Rather, it is a souped-up version of the regular Ford Mustang GT, enhanced with aggressive new body pieces, a cat-back exhaust, Ford Performance Handling Pack, and more - but, critically, no flat-plane crank "Voodoo" V8.
Like its predecessors, the new Shelby Mustang Hertz model is shod in black with gold stripes, and will be available to rent at select Hertz car rental locations. For more on the new Rent-a-Racer, check out our coverage of the official unveiling.
