Over the past few years, Ford has been hard at work renovating and rejuvenating the historic Michigan Central Station site and transforming the former train station into a mobility hub for the future. Over the past few months, we’ve seen Ford begin testing drone delivery there, open the world’s first public wireless EV charging section of road, celebrate a Detroit Lions playoff win, open the nearby restored book depository, purchase numerous surrounding properties, reveal plans to build a hotel, and forge a variety of new energy partnerships, to boot. Now, after years of anticipation, Ford has also announced when, exactly, Michigan Central Station will officially open, too.
Following five years of nearly non-stop construction, Michigan Central Station will celebrate its official opening on June 6th, 2024, at which point visitors will get their very first taste of the fruits of this massive project. It’s a pivotal moment for The Blue Oval as well, one that began back in 2018 when executive chair Bill Ford announced that the automaker planned to not only restore the historic site, but also, help revive the surrounding Corktown neighborhood as well.
The concept behind Michigan Central Station is a multi-faceted one, as it aims to create a place that can attract the world’s leading talent with the intentions of teaming up to solve mobility challenges and help make people’s lives better. At the same time, the revived site will serve as a hub for the arts, culture, workplaces, retail, hospitality, community development, and public outdoor green spaces.
In the meantime, Newlab has already been operating at Michigan Central Station for roughly a year now in the book depository next door, but it won’t be alone much longer – in fact, Ford notes that it will soon be joined by a total of around 80 other companies, all with one goal in mind – to a create a sustainable high-tech startup ecosystem focused on mobility.
