As Ford Authority reported last September, General Motors and Hyundai signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding agreement with the intentions of exploring future collaborations across key strategic areas. The two companies are also aiming to collaborate on the co-development and production of both retail and commercial vehicles, as well as internal combustion engines, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and EVs, which could include Hyundai vans rebadged as GM models in the U.S. Now, Hyundai may be eyeing a mid-size pickup for that same market.
According to GM Authority, Ford’s cross-town rival may share mid-size pickups and all-electric commercial vans in North America in the coming years as part of this new collaboration, along with chips and next-generation EV technology. Hyundai is looking to sell its own version of the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon in that market as a direct Ford Ranger rival, and it’s even reportedly interested in GM’s full-size pickups, though The General hasn’t reportedly agreed to commit to such a thing as of yet.
In return, Hyundai would supply GM with commercial EV vans that could be used to replace the ages-old Chevy Express and GMC Savana models. Those vans would reportedly be imported into the U.S. from South Korea, though it’s also mulling the idea of building them in the U.S. by 2028. That production could take place in an existing plant, a new one, or it could even be outsourced.
None of these moves are set in stone at the moment, as talks between GM and Hyundai remain ongoing, but it’s clear that the two sides envision a relationship that goes beyond pooling resources to procure things like chips, EV batteries, and raw materials. The report also indicates that Hyundai could provide GM with its Creta crossover for the Brazilian market, as well as help it further strengthen its presence in South America, in general.

THIS is what they should have been doing all along.
What happened to GM Korea? Can they assemble such light trucks themselves?
Yes GM Korea can but there is a little thing called the Chicken Tax which assesses a 25% tariff on all trucks imported except from Mexico and Canada. The Hyundai Santa Cruz is assembled in the US and any midsize truck GM would provide Hyundai would have to be assembled in North America to be exempt from the Chicken Tax.
