Back in June 2022, Ford CEO Jim Farley stirred up quite a few strong reactions when he said that the Ford Mustang Mach-E was “a much better product” than the Ford Edge, comments that came at a time when the Edge was reportedly on the verge of being discontinued. Sure enough, the Edge was indeed nixed from The Blue Oval’s lineup after the final example rolled off the line at the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada last year. As for Farley, he’s convinced that Ford’s dealer network can convince Edge buyers to switch to the Mach-E, too.
“That’s all because our dealers can take an Edge customer and say, ‘Would you be interested in a Mach-E?’ ” Farley said during a recent media appearance, according to the Detroit Free Press. “That’s salesmanship that we can’t do at the company.” Farley pointed to the fact that in the first half of 2025, Ford sold 156,509 EVs and hybrids – a 15 percent year-over-year increase – which he attributes to the company’s dealer network, who helped get traditional ICE buyers to make the switch.
As Ford Authority previously reported, the Ford Mustang Mach-E did experience a 19.51 percent decrease in sales over the second quarter of the year, to 10,178 units. However, the automaker blamed that dip on the fact that it issued a stop-sale for the Mach-E due to a recall pertaining to a software glitch that could lock owners inside or outside of the vehicle, meaning that dealers weren’t able to sell any new examples of the EV crossover.
Farley previously credited the automaker’s dealer network for helping Ford achieve a strong 14.2 percent sales increase in Q2 2025 as well. “Whether it’s remote service, Triple Crown awards, training … it’s all done together. We do it together with our dealers. That’s the secret sauce,” Farley said. “That’s why I go on our traveling tour to meet every dealer in the country. I don’t delegate that to someone else. These are our customers. I’m going to meet every one of them and if you’re not a CEO doing that, I don’t know how you are successful as a (manufacturer) because some of those programs work, some of them don’t. We have to make a lot of adjustments.”

Dream on……….
You gotta whole lot of convincing
from the Mach E to the Edge
It’s not going woŕk.
No WAY!!! I am currently an EDGE ST owner and I would NOT by a Mach E..I do not like EV and to reference the EV a MUSTANG is an insult to the Mustang owner community- Which i too am heavily involved.
Agree with you 1000%. The EV mustang is an INSULT to a REAL MUSTANG OWNER!!
My thoughts exactly!!
What a clown. One of the advantages of the Edge is the cargo space. The Mach E does not come close. It has less than the Escape.
I will be in the market again next year and, unless Ford gets their act together, I’m leaning toward a Honda Pilot to fill the gap left by the Edge.
It’s a shame. Been a Ford/Mercury guy my entire life, but they keep shrinking their lineup.
Correction… Honda Passport, not Pilot.
The idiot does not realize that the Edge, Bronco Sport and Escape each have larger interior volume than the Mach E. The idiot also does not realize that Edge buyers are probably not interested in an electric vehicle 🙄
Guess he’s back from summer vacay and back to spewing absurd nonsense.
On one hand, Farley says “that’s salesmanship” on the part of the dealers to push the Mach-E. On the other, he says sales fell because of a recall. In other words, sell low quality goods at premium prices. Now that’s salesmanship!
Sounds like the “old fashioned” salesmanship of trying to sell the customer something they do not want.
Ford did a pretty great job growing sales despite the loss of Edge this year, there are so many alternatives at Ford with the Mach E, Explorer, Escape, and Bronco Sport. Not to mention the Lincoln Nautilus and Corsair.
The Edge has much more room, a much smoother ride, real sunroof, more cargo room, better reliability record, gets over 450 miles on a tank and there are plenty of 2024 models out there used that can be bought in the mid-twenties. Mach E sales were a fraction of the Ford Edge numbers when they were selling head-to-head.
One issue that rarely gets any coverage when it comes to EV’s is charging at home. Most owners I would think…not being a current member of this class of vehicles my self…should consider the amperage currently available coming into their homes. Many new and largely electrical based services such a furnace, water heater, dryer etc., will usually be built with 200 AMP service. Homes with many natural gas features such as those mentioned previously, may come with only 100 AMP service. Looking into most EV home charging systems…they can require up to about 70 AMPs. In a 100 AMP service, this doesn’t leave much left for air conditioning and possibly other big draw electrical demands. Upgrading from 100 AMP to 200 AMP is also not an inexpensive venture. So, this could also be an additional barrier that isn’t discussed much in the public sphere.
And if you live in an apartment it’s even worse. No charging at home means only charging at retail stations where you end up spending the same on a $/km basis as you would with an ICE powered vehicle fueling at your local Shell.
Almost all EV’s pull from 16-40 Amps on 240 v outlet. The breakers for almost all home EV outlets are only 50 Amps, there is no way they can ever pull 70 Amps. A few newer EV’s are capable of pulling more Amps from a 240 outlet, but there is no need for anything more than about 30 Amps for overnight charging. Even 100 Amp service is fine for EV home charging.
More insanity from the CEO
I own a 2014 Ford Edge. The chances of me moving from it to a Mach-E would have to increase to reach zero.
Full battery electric vehicles aren’t ready for prime time. Offer me a hybrid and it’s a totally different matter.
I like the styling of the Mach-E, but I don’t want a BEV.
James I agree with you. I think the ultimate vehicle is a plug-in hybrid, but unfortunately Ford chooses to equip those with wheezer engines. Do something like Porsche – put a real engine (even the 2.0L Eco-boost) in a car with a battery and a charging port, and I will be interested. Hell, I can already see the options – a dial for Full Electric; ICE only; Economy; and Sport. It would be a blast.
OOPS – I forgot. Farley is still in charge.
Farley will soon be looking for a new job. The EV market is DYING, despite any spin one wants to put on it. I would NEVER take an electric vehicle over an Edge.
This guy needs to be fired, no edge driver wants a mach-e. Discontinuing the edge was ridiculous. I see so many of them on the road where I live, I rarely see a mach e. Guy’s lost in the sauce
Mike, I was driving a 2013 Fusion which I loved. Time to buy new last summer. I decided on an Edge, and spec’d out what I wanted. Sorry, they said, no new special orders. Buy what we have or go elsewhere. So I ordered an Escape. Got exactly what I wanted, and I really like the car. But I wanted a new Fusion, and then realized I could be very happy with an Edge, but Farley pushed me down to an Escape; I have been a Ford customer for over many, many years. Now he cancelled the Escape, so this will be the last Ford. And by the way, the Escape Platinum is a very nice car.
I agree. I own an Edge and love the cargo space. My lease will be up 2027. Either I buy it out or go with a Toyota or Honda. I wouldn’t even mind a hybrid.
Further proof Farley is the wrong man for the job.
Why is he still there?
Because the people over him are even more incompetent.
Keith he must have pictures of Bill Ford in uncompromising positions – otherwise why would they keep him and his $24 million salary?
What if you don’t want an EV?
Hope this fool is looking for a new job next week and Ford brings back the Taurus and the Fusion.
Jim is just afraid of the Santa Fe. Cuz you don’t see any of those on road versus Mach e.. The man has the attention span of a gnat and the vision of which cocktail he’s having during happy hour. Oh what happened to the customer focus groups?
AMEN!!
Well said guys.
I will buy from an auction, anything but an EV!
Just when I think Mr. Farley is coming to his senses, he comes out with this non-sense! What a joke!
Ford needs to fire you because you are killing the company
Ford should brought the five passenger Everest to replace the Edge. The Mach E is not comparable to the Edge.
bring back the crown vic and lincoln in awd people still want a awd sedan//////
No, they don’t or they would have sold better when they brought back the Continental in 2017 in AWD, 400 HP and it had more room than the Crown Vic did.
Has Farley actually ever seen any of the Ford vehicles his company sells?
He probably is chauffeured everywhere and doesn’t even have a drivers’ license
That’s what happened to me. Traded in a Ford Edge for the 2024 Mustang Mach-e 4X extendwd range model.;
We have a 2014 edge, and love it. Only has 84000 miles. They can shove the mach e where the sun don’t shine. I don’t know why they discontinued the edge.
Farley is an idiot I have always driven ford’s it looks to no longer will not buy ford with Farley as ceo he ruined ford.
Ford CEO needs to go now
They stop making the fusion I had a 2015 & 2019 I was going upgrade to a new edge I heard they were discontinuing it I just switched to Honda I got a accord I will be looking into getting a new passport with Honda I do not want a EV suv
Farley is a moron. Someone that wants an ICE vehicle isn’t going to switch to an EV just because salesman suggests it. If they wanted an EV, they would ask for it first.
Ditto on the issue with the cargo space. I just recently tried to convert form our Edge to the Mach E. It just won’t work. Period. Even the bucket seats were more rugged. I’m better off going Bronco or Explorer. He is just wrong, the Bronco is the proper alternative to the Edge.
First of all is people don’t like to be told what they should purchase. EVs are not everyone’s cup of tea and to compare the roomy Edge to a more compact Mach E is a little far fetched.
I look at all the comments and you can see how out of touch Ford and it’s CEO are. I am a Ford guy, I own a 22 Mach1 H.P. yes the original Mustang, and a 24 Maverick Hybrid. I don’t trust electric only vehicles. When purchasing the Maverick, I was originally looking for a Ford Edge. I have experience with the Edge as I have recommended then successfully to friends and family. However production had ended and the model I wanted was no longer available. Now I have a brother who also wanted an Edge, now he’s looking at Subaru or VW.
Not only am I a very disappointed Ford Edge owner I’m also a former Ford assembly plant long time employee. My Ford Edge has had problem after problem and still does if I had a second vehicle to drive the second vehicle would be my first choice. It would be nice if Ford would actually help get me into something reliable and mechanically sound which is what’s expected in a new vehicle and the product of Our Own. Die Hard for supporter all my life just very disappointed in my Edge
Board of Directors need to do a drug screen on this clown
I have a 2021 Edge Titanium. It is a great SUV and suits my needs perfectly. An EV will never be in my garage so I guess the CEO , Farley, is telling me to go to his competitors to buy the vehicle I want next time. Too bad as I have been a Ford guy happily for many, many, years.
In Farley’s world, the Edge and MachE both have 4 wheels. Other than the blue oval, that’s it.
I bought a used off lease 2020 Edge last year. It was a stop gap vehicle, sort of, to have something larger than our Escape, smaller than the F150. I was looking for an off lease hybrid Explorer, but they were hard to come by and this caught my interest when it came to my dealers inventory. I would not actually have considered an Edge before I drove this one then bought it. I have been impressed and really like it. I would consider one for my next new vehicle in a year or so but, of course, there will be none. First the Fusion, now the Edge, what’s next? I scratch my head sometimes wondering who, and why, these decisions are made.
Well, boys and girls, here he goes again. He knows what you need and you, the customer, are too stupid to know what you need, so he will make the decision for you. Let’s sum up what Farley has vomited out of his mouth recently:
Chinese cars are far superior to Ford vehicles. He is continually amazed at how his cars suck and the Chinese are so good. Yet we pay him $24 million per year for his expertise. Really?
Ford customers are too dumb to know what vehicle they want (he has said this on multiple occasions – I’m of course paraphrasing but this IS the message), so he will cancel the vehicles he doesn’t like and only sell what he does like. Toyota and Honda must be ecstatic. Really?
His COO said that all the Ford recalls are part of the master plan. Ford has had more recalls for problems in the first 7 months of 2025 than any previous automaker has had in a full year. So obviously, by the Ford management’s thinking, Ford vehicles must be better, because they’re following their master plan. Really?
Ford cars are boring, and he wants no more boring cars. So he cancels them. Tell your wife she can take the kids to soccer practice in a Sasquatch Bronco with 30 inch tires. Then go grocery shopping or stop to visit friends. Perfect match, ‘eh Farley? So instead of selling 150,000 Escapes, they will sell 10,000 Sasquatches. Great financial move. Really?
Ford never made money on sedans according to him. Selling 200,000 Fusions a year lost money. Really? Maybe if you built them correctly you wouldn’t have thousands of recalls on your vehicles and costs would miraculously drop so much you’d make a profit.
Ford has been the undisputed leader in vehicle sales for 20 years or more – the F150 – until Farley got here. This year, he saw that streak stopped cold; a small Toyota SUV I believe took the crown earlier this year, a segment he has decided to exit. Because he says no one needs that kind of vehicle. And he doesn’t like them. Really?
Farley made about $24,000,000 last year. Not bad for a tree-hugger who is running a car company (or should I say ruining a car company), promising to outsource ICE engines because he doesn’t want to build them anymore.
I wish Bill Ford would stop playing with the multi-billion investment in the train station (beautiful by the way, but with a $2 billion budget, I think anyone could have done it), and get Alan Mullaly back for a few years – pay him $50 million a year, he’ll solve the problem. I’ll volunteer to move to Michigan and paper-shred anything in the company that bears Farley’s name. Maybe an ‘enema’ is what the company needs now.
It will be a cold day in Hell before I replace my Edge with a Mach E or any other battery powered vehicle.
Just when I was considering trading my Edge for another one, Ford announces they are discontinuing one of the best vehicles in their inventory. Makes me wonder what other bad decisions Ford is making.
The Ford Edge was a boat anchor. It was overdue to be discontinued. Suffered transaxle, and engine issues in numerous models. Water pump inside the engine? Front transfer case with no ability to change fluids. 🙄
Farley spends way too much time playing with race cars, high performance models, and wine cheese parties instead of relating to customers. He’s clueless what Edge, Escape, and sedan buyers need and want – cargo room, reliability, and reasonable prices. Ford+Lincoln prices are absurd and depreciate rapidly because bling ages fast. Get rid of this Farley clown and return Ford to the company that avoided economic blunders and endless recalls without fixes.
The first thing Ford did wrong was put the “Mach” name on an EV. Coming from a true Mach 1 owner it just made me sick.
Second I own a 2018 and I will Never own an EV!! This guy really needs to go out and talk to his customers instead of hits dealerships if he wants true feedback on the Mach EV!
I have leased 6 Edges and am currently leasing a 2024 Edge and a 2024 Bronco Sport. I am a retired Ford employee and have leased more than 20 Ford products since retirement. I love every Edge I have owned. We use the Edge for longer trips and use the Bronco around town. The Mach E is good looking and I might be interested in that vehicle if it was powered by ICE. I don’t know what I will do when the leases expire on these two vehicles, but I am sure that I will not buy an electric vehicle. I have never owned a vehicle that wasn’t built by a Ford owned plant. My grandfather spent his life at Ford. My father worked his whole life at Ford, my mother and most of my uncles worked at Ford and I spent my entire career at Ford, so I don’t want to buy anything but a Ford product. Currently, there are no vehicles that I want to buy. A technician at the Ford dealership that I do business with told me that a couple of weeks ago, 4 Ford Mexican made “Territory” vehicles came to his dealership for display and inspection. He said that he was not able to tell me whether these vehicles were coming to the US. These vehicles are currently sold in Mexico. They look nice and I hope they are coming to the US soon.
Hopefully they will be BUILT in the US
LOL. Nah dude, I’m just getting an Explorer next. Until EVs can go 500 between charges and charge in under 5 minutes, I’m sticking to ICE. Mach-E is hideous trash.
Wow! Tons of comments here! Love it! I like the Mach-e and Edge; however, they are not the same. I can’t make it on an EV. I like my Explorer ST. I think I would like a 2 row seater version, one without so many recalls. I don’t get it. Ford has only a few 400 + HP SUVs (really, just one, right?). Many of the European vendors offer several “Big Motor” SUVs in different sizes. And, they are like $40K more, thus, the Explorer ST for me. Finally, I like the look of the Lincoln Nautilus, but it’s under-powered. Need a 400 HP replacement for the Edge.
Love my Edge, and I am not even remotely interested in a MachE. Honestly, I don’t see myself buying another Ford. Don’t want a small Escape. Don’t need a large Explorer. And, since you no longer make cars I’ll probably get a Honda or Toyota.
Bad move and I work Ford we need more affordable SUVs and cars hybrid ICE evs your killing the company listen to the people
Fat Chance. Not the first time I’ve wondered if he’s on hard drugs. What a moron, it’s time to kick him to the curb.
For the life of me, I just can’t understand why Ford would discontinue a vehicle as perfect as the Edge! I’m driving mine until it absolutely dies! The other option is actually the Explorer which only leaves a 7” clearance front to back in my garage – not happening – I tried and bought another Edge.
He should be worrying about the hundreds of thousand recalls no way will I buy a Mach E I have had 3 Edges loyal Ford buyer they don’t make a car for me anymore!!
Farley might actually make Jacques Nasser look good. Yikes!
First of all Mach E Mustangs are overpriced and overrated. They are usually at least @ $15k more. I own a ’22 Edge & would not trade it for a Mach E. There’s no room. Ford would do best by replacing Farley with someone who has some common sense and is concerned about the customer. !!
Yeah Right, it’s time for Farley’s drug test.
Have owed two Edges. Currently own a 2017. Love it. Really disappointed when I heard they were dropping them. Probably look at the Chevy Equinox next time.
Have owned two Edges. Currently own a 2017. Love it. I was really disappointed when I heard that they were dropping them. No Mach E for me. Probably look into the Chevy Equinox next time.
I purchased my second Ford Edge knowing Ford made a mistake in discontinuing the Edge. I love my Edge, it’s the perfect vehicle for me. You couldn’t give me an E-vehicle. I have a friend who is going to have to pay $15,000 for a battery for her E-car. That is insane.
You like many did. Manny folks buy their leases or switch brands unfortunately.
People who don’t have connection to what customers want should really gain insights. America ask for hybrids and you give them full electric. A hand full of people interested in a new experience is going to be open. The majority of Edge drivers will not change they will switch brands unfortunately.
I am the boots on the ground living Ford life.
I can tell everybody that the space of Mach-E is smaller than EVOS.
