The New York Police Department (NYPD) has been working to “green” up its fleet for quite some time now, a process that began back in 2019 with the purchase of vehicles such as the hybrid Ford Fusion-based Police Responder Sedan and the Ford Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility. More recently, NYPD has also committed to EVs, purchasing and upfitting over 100 Ford Mustang Mach-E crossovers, even though it isn’t currently offered in official police guise. Now, in spite of that pure EV shift, NYPD has purchased a host of new hybrid Ford Police Interceptor Utility SUVs.
In this recent post on Instagram, NYPD shared some footage of its latest purchase, which consists of 140 new Ford Police Interceptor Utility models, but that’s just the beginning, apparently. The department plans on beefing up its hybrid fleet to 1,500 units over time, which is an interesting footnote given the fact that it previously announced it was going all-electric by 2035. Regardless, that’s still roughly a decade away, so there’s still plenty of time to get there.

The updated 2025 version of the Ford Police Interceptor Utility debuted alongside the refreshed civilian model, but it’s a bit different in a few notable ways. One thing that most will immediately notice is the fact that the 2025 Ford Police Interceptor Utility doesn’t utilize the same revised front fascia as its civilian counterpart, an interesting tidbit that Ford Authority originally revealed back in July 2023. Rather, the Police Interceptor Utility soldiers on with the same headlights, grille, and bumper as the previous model, though it has received a few updates in other areas.
Unlike the regular Explorer, the 2025 Ford Police Interceptor is also still available with the 3.3L V6 hybrid powertrain – in this case, as standard equipment, which – as Ford Authority previously reported – is due to high demand for the electrified law enforcement version. Customers can also choose from a regular, non-hybrid version of the 3.3L V6, as well as the twin-turbo 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, each driving all four wheels.
