The 5.0L Miami engine was a supercharged V8 that was jointly designed by Ford Australia and Prodrive, a Britain-based company with experience in engineering components for motorsports competition. The Miami V8 was exclusive to select models of the Ford Falcon sedans and utes during the 2011 through 2016 model years.

Based on the naturally-aspirated 5.0L Coyote V8, the Miami engine shares the same block and crank as the more widely available V8. The rest of the components – from the oil sump to the supercharger to the wiring harness and ECU – were created in Australia. Due to the difference in hardware, specifically limitations to the ECU, the Miami V8 only has Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on the intake cams rather than both the intake and exhaust cams like the Coyote V8 it’s based on.
According to Bryan Mears, Managing Director of Prodrive’s Asia Pacific Division, the development of the Miami V8 took three years and cost $36 million ASD. The goal was to build an engine that offered greater performance than the 5.4L Boss V8 used by earlier performance Ford Falcon models, while meeting more stringent emissions requirements.
Vehicle Applications
The Miami engine was utilized by various Ford Falcon sedans and utes with outputs ranging from 422 to 462 horsepower.
Model Year(s) | Make | Model | Transmission | Drive Wheels | Power (hp) @ RPM | Torque (lb-ft) @ RPM |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2010 - 2014 | Ford | Falcon GS | 6-Speed Automatic / 6-Speed Manual | RWD | 422 @ 5,740 | 402 @ 2,200 |
2010 - 2014 | Ford | Falcon GT, GT-P, GT-E, GT Black | 6-Speed Automatic / 6-Speed Manual | RWD | 449 @ 5,750 | 420 @ 2,200 |
2014 - 2016 | Ford | Falcon XR8 | 6-Speed Automatic / 6-Speed Manual | RWD | 449 @ 5,750 | 420 @ 2,200 |
2014 | Ford | Falcon GT 351, GT F | 6-Speed Automatic / 6-Speed Manual | RWD | 471 @ 6,000 | 420 @ 2,500 |
Notably, a package created by Premcar, an Australian aftermarket tuner, pushed peak horsepower to 648 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque.
Production
Final assembly of the supercharged 5.0L Miami engine took place at Ford Performance Vehicle’s Geelong engine plant in Victoria, Australia.
The Ford Falcon, which was the only nameplate to ever utilize the Miami engine, was discontinued after the 2016 model year, along with the engine itself.
Engine Family
The supercharged V8 5.0L Miami engine is part of the Ford Modular engine family – a series of V8 gasoline engines used in various vehicles. More specifically, the Miami V8 is a variant of the Ford Coyote engine.
Predecessor
The supercharged 5.0L Miami engine has no direct predecessor nor successor, though it can be considered a replacement for the 5.4L Boss V8, which was the engine used by performance Ford Falcon models prior to the arrival of the Miami V8.
Successor
Though not a direct successor, the 5.2L Ford Predator engine used in the S550-generation Mustang can be considered a successor to the Miami V8.
