Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark Capri, Cortina, Escort, Granada, and Orion with the Intellectual Property offices of Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union, Ford Authority has learned.

Filed on December 23rd, 2021, these applications contain the goods and services description of “Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.”

Australian Trademarks
Brand Application Number Application Date Goods & Services

CORTINA 2239058 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor

The Ford Authority Take

Each of these filings refers to either an existing or past model within Ford’s global lineup. Sources have told Ford Authority that Ford CEO Jim Farley is a fan of using model names with built-in recognition, which is the reasoning behind the use of “Mustang” in the Ford Mustang Mach-E, “Lightning” in the Ford F-150 Lightning, “Bronco” in Ford Bronco Sport, and the Ford Maverick.

New Zealand Trademarks
Brand Application Number Application Date Goods & Services
CAPRI 1199109 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
CORTINA 1199110 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
ESCORT 1199111 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
GRANADA 1199112 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
ORION 1199113 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.

Older yet highly recognizable names are making a comeback at Ford, suffice to say, as we’ve seen from recent trademark filings for the Ford Excursion and Ford Thunderbird, two discontinued but popular models from The Blue Oval’s past.

Europe Trademarks
Brand Application Number Application Date Goods & Services
CAPRI 18628100 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
CORTINA 18628104 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
ESCORT 18628101 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
GRANADA 18628103 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.
ORION 18628098 12/23/21 Land motor vehicles and parts and accessories therefor.

It’s unclear if these trademark filings mean that Ford intends to bring back these model names from its past, but the fact that the automaker has trademarked each is interesting, nonetheless.

We’ll have more on these and all of Ford’s trademark filings soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for the latest Ford trademark news, Ford business news, and around-the-clock Ford news coverage.
