Ford ‘Milan’ Trademark Filing Could Foreshadow Something Interesting

Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Milan” with the Mexico Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI – Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial), Ford Authority has learned.

Filed on December 1st, 2023, under the serial number 0119853065967, this application contains the goods and services description of “Motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, trucks, vans, sports utility vehicles, and their structural parts and engines (vehiculos de motor, a saber, automoviles, camiones, vans, vehiculos de utilidad deportiva y sus partes estructurales y motores).”

The Ford Authority Take

Milan is a name that should be familiar to Blue Oval fans that have been around for a few years, given the fact that the now-defunct division dubbed Mercury sold such a model between the 2006 and 2011 model years. The Mercury Milan was a mid-size sedan named after the Italian city of the same name, and it was also the last new Mercury nameplate launched prior to the brand’s demise, too. The Milan was essentially Mercury’s version of the Ford Fusion (and the Lincoln MKZ), which it was built alongside at the Hermosillo Assembly plant in Mexico until the last example rolled off the assembly line in late 2010.

Given the fact that Mercury no longer exists, we’re unlikely to see the Milan return in that form, but it could potentially be used on a brand new offering or some sort of trim level on an existing Blue Oval product in the near future. The Mercury Milan was an entry-level model for that particular brand, and alongside the Montego, was developed to replace the Sable.

As far as what the Milan name might grace moving forward, that much remains entirely unclear. It’s possible that it could be used on a more affordable model as was previously the case, or possibly something different altogether. Regardless, it’s certainly interesting that FoMoCo has chosen to revive the Milan name, which it hasn’t used since the last example was built more than a decade ago.

  • 2004 Red Mercury Marauder with grey interior was to be auctioned recently. Did the car sell and for what price? Where was the sale to take place? If the car didn't sell, could I get the owners name, address, and phone number?
    Thanks much..
