Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a Pro Power Onboard security mode that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on January 26th, 2023, published on May 27th, 2025, and assigned serial number 12311770.

The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, Ford has filed patents for ideas including an electric power take-off system used to transfer mechanical power from an internal combustion engine to another piece of equipment, such as a conveyor or lift, as well as a new type of potential Pro Power Onboard interface. Now, this newly published patent presents us with an idea for a Pro Power Onboard security mode that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

If this patent comes to fruition, future Ford vehicles equipped with Pro Power Onboard would be capable of monitoring the load coming from that system, and if that changes, it would alert the owner via their mobile device. If the user verifies that they have changed the load, the system will continue operating as normal, but if they check no, it would shut Pro Power Onboard down. This would only happen if the user opts to use security mode while PPO is active, and is designed to notify them if someone is unplugging their device – or perhaps even try to use it without their knowledge.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
