Ford Maverick Assembly Plant To Add Third Shift This July

In its very first year on sale, the Ford Maverick proved to be a tremendous success by any regard, even amid crippling supply chain issues that hampered production of the new compact pickup. Even so, the Ford Maverick managed to outsell its big brother, the Ford Ranger, last year, while the automaker took a whopping 86,000 orders for the 2023 model in just a week before shutting order banks down. Now, with production of the 2023 Maverick underway at the Hermosillo Assembly plant in Mexico, that same facility will soon add a third shift, according to Uniradio Informa.

The new third shift is slated to begin in July, and Ford will reportedly hire 1,100 new direct workers and 5,000 indirect employees at the Hermosillo plant to support the expansion, according to Jesús Gámez García, president of the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry. The move, as one might expect, stems from high demand for the Ford Maverick in the U.S.

“This pickup is the one that is triggering the opening of a third shift, it would be very good. And I know that Ford managers have been commenting on it, looking to bring new suppliers for Ford here, because as we create a local, cluster-type production chain, we become more competitive and logistics costs and delivery times are reduced,” García said.

Though such a move figures to help ramp up production of the Ford Maverick, the compact pickup is also facing numerous supply chain issues, just like most every new model on sale today. The most recent, as Ford Authority reported last month, include the Hybrid model, XL trim, Ford Co-Pilot360, the Co-PIlot360 Assist Package, XLT Luxury Package, Lariat Luxury Package, and Tremor Off-Road Package.

We’ll have more on the Maverick soon soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for the latest Ford Maverick news and comprehensive Ford news coverage.

  • When can I order a maverick this year 2023. Wondering here in Arkansas. Let me know please thanks 👍

    • They closed the order banks in September 2022 for the 2023 trucks. I am guessing we won't see FOMO taking any new orders until possibly the Fall of 2023.

  • Finally a third shift. I ordered the hyrbid in September, so hopefully I'll get it before the end of the summer. Maybe.............

    • Same here. If Ford doesn't deliver it this model year then I'll just wait for the Toyota version if they announce for MY24...

    • So, where do you live Mike? You must have ordered it during the one week they had the order banks open. You don't have a build date yet? That doesn't make sense, as I ordered mine the second day(September 16th) and it arrived in Denver on Dec 27th with a build date of December 2. Don't know why it would take 2 weeks longer to get anywhere in the U.S.Did you order with all the chip shortage components possibly?

      • I ordered mine in that same week, and purposely ordered the base XL with the only options being the trailer hitch receiver and a full sized spare. I figured they (Ford) might be smart enough, in this constrained environment, to build what they had parts for first to get them out the door....but no, it seems like they are building the ones with the most expensive add-ons that are not constrained to get more cash in the door. Smart business decision, but sucks for us that tried to help them out with a base order.

      • I ordered my base XL hybrid model September 15th and nothing but crickets from Ford I live in Washington State No build date yet :(

      • Ordered my XLT the first day 2hrs in. No build date or any info except every 45 days and another excuse.

  • I ordered two Mavericks during the 6-day window. One hybrid, one AWD, FX4. I'm looking forward to getting them, one day.............

  • I ordered 9/23/21, hybrid Lariat, got a vin number for ‘22 then got pushed back to a’23. Now have a new vin number for a’23 and build date of 2/6/23. Hoping for the best!

  • Can anyone provide clarity on if the specific "supply chain" issues are severe enough that NO Mavericks with a supply-constrained part are being produced, or is the impact such that there are at least SOME Mavericks with those components being produced? And if it's the latter, can you share what the priority of the production process is for the orders that have been submitted? My order was placed back on 9/15/2021 (!), literally 493 days ago! Does my order get prioritized to be produced before other orders that came after September 2021?

    • John I have asked for the information about priority lists and haven't seen or heard from anyone.

    • For your question about production priority, look at your order confirmation. If you a carry over from’22 you should see a “10.” People who ordered a 23 in Sept if ‘22 should be a 15 or higher. This means you’re a higher build if it’s apples versus apples build. Your order is only prioritized before MY 23 orders placed on Sept 22. You don’t get to jump people who ordered during model year 21 for the 22, which carried over. Hope that made sense

  • Good friend and college roommate lives near by in the wilds of Wyoming. He ordered a XLT Maverick Tremor during the 4-day "window" (Oct/Nov?) from my dealer in Iowa. He doesn't like add-on "electronic stuff" as he calls it, so didn't order them. It's not stripped down and was ordered with a sunroof. He picked it up a week and a half ago. The dealer suggested that he, the dealer, have items that may effect delivery installed locally; i.e. bed liner, bed cover, mud flaps, and rubber floor mats. In my mind one or two things have affected his order. 1) the stars aligned and his order happened to be timed perfectly, or 2) Ford wants to get Tremors on the street as a rolling advertisements. Ford communicated with him in a manner expected as well. He received his VIN and production date within a month and there were no delays from that original date. That's a real contrast from another Maverick customer from the same dealer. It has all the add-ons and the customer has been waiting over a year and still does not have a VIN or production date. Suspect a third shift will be to fill orders for the lower end models without supply chain extras just to keep customers from what some have indicated, order from GM or Toyota given their indication to build in that segment.

    • Agree with getting tremors out on streets to promote brand but also because these have greater marginal profit than some other versions.

Don’t necessarily agree that 3rd will have extremely different mix than other shifts, but it may.

To the extent orders, customer take rates and robust supply allows it, generally, to balance the line and not burn out the workers, the line runs with a variety of trim levels. (In the past to avoid line skips, certain vehicles were built on spec to create variance in trim and option installation rates.)

  • Ford you needed a 3rd shift like yesterday too little to late NOW’s the time not July come on guys and gals get your rears in gear don’t make your already frustrated customers wait any longer I know because I am one of them

      • I seriously doubt they’re going to have an entire shift idle. Obviously they’re hiring due to lagging labor versus supply/demand. It isn’t like Ford just started hiring production workers this century.

  • I ordered an eco boost and a hybird at the same time oct 2021, got the eco boost in nov 2022 but still waiting on the hybird, jan 2023.
