After starting out as a humble comic book, Batman has since gone on to inspire the creation of a TV show and countless movies, which are quite literally ingrained in pop culture at this point. As such, a legion of fans have created their own replicas and tributes to Batman’s famous ride – the Batmobile – in every form that it has existed in over the years, too. That includes the earlier Batmobile – based on the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car that was subsequently customized by the late, great George Barris for the original TV show – and this 1979 Lincoln Continental certainly looks to be pretty close to the real thing in every department.
This particular Batmobile replica is up for auction at Bring a Trailer following a very extensive conversion process that took place under prior ownership, and it certainly looks great in its current guise. It was built using a fiberglass replica body produced by Batrodz of New York, which is mounted to a 1979 Lincoln Continental chassis, and was just repainted in black with red accents and bat emblems last year. The replica rolls on a set of alloy wheels with red bat emblems, too.
Peek inside the open cockpit, and one will find black bucket seats with red piping, Tambour-style panels on the dashboard, toggle-switch controls, a faux radar console, light displays, decorative levers, a Grant steering wheel, and AutoMeter gauges. Power comes from a 400 cubic-inch V8 fitted with an Edelbrock carburetor and Performer intake manifold, which is mated to three-speed automatic transmission.
We’ve certainly seen our fair share of similar Batmobile builds in recent months, which is just a testament to their popularity. That list includes one based on a 1978 Continental, another built using the same model from 1979, and even Batmobile No. 3, an actual example of that car used in the 1966 television series.
Tire strategy proved their undoing, though.
