Ford F-150 Lawsuit Filed In Canada Over Excessive Oil Consumption

A new class-action Ford F-150 lawsuit, William Kennedy, v. Ford Motor Company, et al, has been filed in the Ontario Canada Superior Court of Justice alleging that Ford’s 5.0L Coyote V8 is defective. The lawsuit, which includes 2018-2020 Ford F-150 models equipped with the Coyote engine, claims that a number of defects cause excessive oil consumption by allowing oil to enter the combustion chambers, according to Car Complaints.

According to the Ford F-150 lawsuit, the owner of a 2018 F-150 began having oil consumption problems within his first year of ownership. The dealer informed him that the problem was caused by a faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve and replaced the part, but the truck continued to consume oil. At one point, the engine ran nearly completely dry.

The lawsuit notes that the oil consumption problem is also caused by the piston and oil rings, which allegedly don’t keep enough tension to retain oil in the crankcase. Excessive amounts of oil can then flow freely into the combustion chamber and exhaust. Additionally, the PCV valve reportedly fails to reduce combustion chamber pressure, which further compounds the problem.

According to the lawsuit, excessive oil consumption can cause a number of issues including fouling of spark plugs and piston rings, low oil pressure, engine knock, lack of lubrication, low oil levels, engine stalling, and in some cases, complete engine failure. Plaintiffs claim that Ford has had “longstanding knowledge” of the issue, but has not taken action to rectify it or notify customers of the problem.

This Ford F-150 lawsuit is one of several filed in recent months, including others related to misstated fuel economy numbers, Ford’s 10R80 transmission, warped dashboards, and defective paint.

  • Proof reading error...first paragraph, second sentence...the word should be "enter" not "entire"...

  • Should have left the 4.6 and 5.4 in place. FORD has proven that they just can't make sure things are right beforehand.

    • "should have left the 4.6 and 5.4 in place", or actually engage the quality control button. A 5.0 isn't new- covid, and the chip shortage has created a shortage of new trucks, ford's answer: build crap as fast as you can, $$$$$, don't worry about the quality, just get that money.....

      • I don't disagree but if FORD is going to blame COVID, then they truly get the crap they well deserve.

  • Well I'm still driving my 2004 4.6 and been thinking about a new truck. The F 150 is big for ford so they better get it ✅. Right!

    • Once again Ford is in the hole. They need to acknowledge the problem and fix it. If they are planning the same strategy like the 6 speed dual clutches and kick it down the street, its going to be a big backlash. Replace the truck and give the man another one. He is the customer period.

  • I have the 2015 5.0 Coyote with 175,000 mi on it. Other than basic required maintenance I have only replaced the water pump. I'm a huge fan of this motor especially when you put the transmission in sport mode.

    • There are enough coyote engines in service (most owners love them) to realize it is not the engine, but the cheap parts (likely from china) and/or poor workmanship in assembly, and the complete lack of QC. As long as ford can dump crap out on the street $$$$, due to chip shortage/covid/ etc. they'll do what is best for the CEO's bonus, not the customer. SAD

      • Oh so it's a good engine but the parts are bad? So it's a really good lawnmower but the engine doesn't start and the blade is missing. Hey, it's all on FORD and customers don't care about the salary of the CEO and other internal issues. They spend hard earned money of a new truck that won't steer, paint falls off, electrical issues, driveshaft falls off, tranny problems, and now engines that drink oil. They want it fixed and now. Perfect truck to be placed on the playground for kids to play on. It won't work anyway so no need to disconnect anything. :)

        • No, the bad 5.0s are just that BAD. My point is, ford has built some really good 5.0s, so the problem does lie with the design, or the ability to mfg. To suddenly start having problems with a time tested good engine would lead one to believe it is either the parts or the way it was put together (to include QC). It also brings to mind, Why? The first and most likely reason: profit, job one at ford is to make a profit. Ford should fix the problem(s) with the f150, and fast Ford should also fix the problem(s) with their 4 bangers! The number of people with a ford 4 cylinder problem is Huge, it is requiring Class Action Law suits to even get them to the table. (this site has a very good, and very long string regarding the problem).

    • Keep it, don't plan on trading it in on a new Ford product, it may come with rusted parts from the factory, contaminated windshield washer fluid, or a plastic oil pan.

    • Now that's the attitude to take! Yes sir. The best way to fix a problem is: Ignore it! In fact, suggest another source. The first step in solving a problem, is in fact, to admit there is a problem, to hide one's head in the sand, is......well- it is self explanatory.

  • Funny that there has been no coverage of this problem. And how did the stupid person suing almost run the motor "DRY"? So he ignored the dash warning indicator and drove it with low oil. He drove a truck that had burned 8-9 quarts of oil, really? His truck had to be smoking like a fogger machine and he kept driving it? Sounds like a learning challenged liar to me. This case will get tossed on that statement alone. If he abused the truck by almost running it dry of oil and the Coyote uses 10 quarts of oil he is stupid! Total bill shot! If the Coyote has issues with piston ring then why do we not see Coyote's on the streets exhibiting this by smoking. I have seen zero Coyotes on the streets smoking and our Coyote is a dream engine. If it had ring problems it would smoking like mad. So would many thousands of Coyote's, LOL! Sounds to me like he never bothered changing oil or paid attention to his trucks low oil pressure warnings and screwed up the engine himself, then found an ignorant shyster shark to file a nuisance suit. Will go nowhere. Has anyone seen a smoking Coyote powered vehicle driving down the road?

    • I was under the impression that a Class Action Law Suit, was in fact that, a Class of plaintiffs. Of course I am not a lawyer in Canada. Maybe in Canada when one person sues a large corporation, it is called a Class Action Lawsuit, if so, my next comments do not apply. If there is a Class of plaintiffs, then one mans problem(s) with the 5.0 would be just one of many. I'd like to see further reporting on this issue, as there may only be one guy in Canada with a problem, or-there maybe an entire group (Class) suffering the same problem, in which case, it is a "horse of a different color".

      • A Class action take only two or more people and promises to include anyone that wants to be included in the class then the sharks advertise to get additional plaintiffs. As a class member you do not have to provide proof of damages. I have joined many class action suits from solicitations and collected money for Sylvania headlight bulbs (lied about them being brighter), disposal of Computer monitors where big box stores were paid to recycle but were trashed, cell phone batteries that were not the advertised capacity and other stuff I was entitled to and waiting on a check from a Blue Cross suit right now. You do not have to prove you actually had the products here. In this case you only have to be an owner or former owner of a vehicle with the Coyote engine and have the VIN number to prove it before you will get a check if they win. Look at simple facts. If the Coyote had widespread oil burning problems the EPA and the State of California would be all over Ford because emissions/powertrain are warranted for 50K miles and you cannot pass burning oil. Along with NHTSA who does the US recalls and would be forcing a recall with complaints of emission affecting oil consumption. Here where I live we have annual emissions testing for tag renewal and those cars would never pass to get a new tag.

This suit is what is called a "nuisance" suit, no proof of anything and Ford will throw the amount of money in legal fees it will take to get it dropped and pay them something to make them go away and stop publicity like this is getting. It amuses me the man states he almost ran his engine dry of oil. What kind of driver ignores all the warnings a car gives you and keeps driving without oil and destroying the engine? Would you? The legal system is a money grabbing corrupt system here in the States. Looked it up just now and the numbers say the plaintiffs lose 90% of the time if you take them to court in the US like I did three times and won.

  • I was never a fan of the 5.0 I always thought it was ok for a car but not a truck . Ford has a history of always trying to build a better engine . And a history of failing at it as well . I use to be a Ford guy but not anymore and mostly this is because of the poor engineering department .

  • Nah, a Ford that burns oil is still better than a bailout Chevy or a Fiat/Ram that doesn't!

  • I agree with Josh, the guy has to be a stupid idiot to not notice the low oil pressure light and/or the check engine light. Also he might have made some mods to the engine and screwed some stuff up

    • For those actually interested in the problem, across the board at ford, not just "one guy". they may look at Ford's Technical bulletins!
      TSB 19-2058
      TSB 19-2133
      TSB 19-2365
The old saying, " Where there is smoke there is fire.." may very well apply.

      • Isn't it wonderful Ford not only acknowledges problems, they even notify the dealers with TSB's what to look for and how to correct it. Sounds like they are taking care of me and our two Fords to me. The vast majority of owners have zero troubles and it never gets mentioned on this Ford Hater site. 6 Fords and 2 had minor warranty issues of a loose/missing bolt on a clutch pedal and the other was an AC vent issue.

TSB's do not mean all cars/trucks listed for that TSB are affected. Usually it states "SOME" may have an issue and how to determine what is happening and how to correct it. I had a recall for some cars in certain years. A quick look at the head casting number determined I had the newer head and did not need to bring the car in. So even recalls refer to some many times.
I'm sure most of these "warped" oil pans simply have RTV adhesion problems as noted in several TSB's

        Great words from a song
"But a what fool believes, he sees.
The wise man has the power to reason away
        What seems to be."

        From Ford
        "Truck Customers Make F-Series America’s Best-Selling Pickup For 44
        Straight Years"
(Even with plastic oil pans. GM and Fiat cannot compete in all of those years.)

"Ford Brand Achieves 11 Straight Years as America’s
        Best-Selling Brand"
(Because Fords are so unreliable I guess.)

        • I guess you are saying for 44 straight years (did they have none straight years?) ford has used plastic oil pans? The reliability of the current product can be measured by the the previous offerings, as the product has changed. the great old ford v8s of the past decades lasted and lasted, best pickup trucks ever made; however, for those not knowledgeable on the subject, the new f150 is NOT the same truck you purched 20-30 or even 44 years ago. While there are large numbers of old ford f150s still around-and still doing what trucks do, these new ecoboom models won't be running around in 44 years, not to mention even 20 years-they are Not built to last as the old ones were. For some reason there are those that want to measure fords using a GM yardstick, sad really. It is as if GM had leaks in their gas tanks, ford should make sure they had leaks too, just not as bad. I think the opioid epidemic has effect a lot of minds in our county....you can see some on this very board.
