Tesla Cybertruck, 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Rival, Indefinitely Delayed

The Tesla Cybertruck was revealed back in 2019, and the all-electric pickup was originally slated to launch by the end of 2021. However, that date was later pushed to 2022 and then late 2022, with production expected to fully ramp up in 2023. Now that 2022 has arrived, Tesla mysteriously removed any mention of the Cybertruck’s potential launch date from its official site, merely saying that reservation holders “will be able to complete your configuration as production nears.”

This latest delay doesn’t come as a major surprise, since the automaker’s new Gigafactory Texas – where the Tesla Cybertruck will be built – is still under construction, and that plant will also build the Model Y once it’s operational. Secondly, the Cybertruck will utilize Tesla’s new 4680 battery cells – which will also be used in Tesla’s forthcoming semi-truck – although those batteries are currently supply-constrained, leading to delays in the semi’s launch as well. Tesla has also made a number of changes to the Cybertruck’s design recently, which further complicates matters.

It already appeared that the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will beat the Cybertruck to market, and this latest delay seems to seal that fate as Ford’s all-electric pickup is on track for a spring launch. After accumulating over 200,000 reservations for the F-150 Lighting, Ford recently announced that it will nearly double its planned production of the new model by mid-2023, but also admitted that it likely won’t be able to fulfill all of the forthcoming customer orders in the 2022 model year, as CEO Jim Farley expects that 80 percent of those folks will convert their reservations to orders.

The first wave of Ford’s staggered orders for the F-150 Lightning went out last week, though a few reservation holders have already been surprised by some pretty substantial dealer markups. As Ford Authority reported last week, the automaker recently sent out a memo warning dealers that their actions could result in a loss of allocations, and also revealed that it plans on selling the F-150 Lightning with a one-year no-sale provision.

  • Pssst Tesla has more new batteries than Ford has access to. 3 million pre orders for cybertruck vs only 200k for the Ford.

  • I’ll still gladly wait for my Cybertruck. I wont buy crap rushed off the assembly line. The Ford will be a dud. Just looking at its specs tell you its future: the recall line or scrapyard. Its batteries will degrade super fast.

    • "I wont buy crap rushed off the assembly line."
I guess you won't be getting a Cybertruck then either because that's how it will be built.

    • Yep.....TESLA just recalled a half a million cars because the frunk flies open at highway speed and causes the blinded TESLA nerds to crash. There is a reason why TESLA is ranked DEAD last on quality....initial....mid-term...and final.

      • Actually it's a small amount of model S's that have that issue. The most of that recall is from the model 3 backup camera.

Not much of a recall. Vs what I've seen from other OEMs even my Toyota, in the millions have recalls. Most for over looked stuff but the worst from being the gas pedal chaos.

    • Yeah...they're disgusting....but they cannot help themselves....all that TESLA EMF has skrewed up their brains.

      • Ya all the dumb millionaire Tesla nerds. Lol 😂
Elons such a nerd. Saving the world w Tesla. Saving mankind w space X. Saving paralyzed people from suffering w nuerolink
        Wow what a fn NERD

  • how many Ford Lightnings will be delivered in 2022? 😆 just because they’ll deliver 100 Lightnings all of a sudden makes Ford take the lead? makes no sense. Makes more sense for Tesla to pump out more of their popular model (Model Y) at higher margins, lower cost, and more profit.

    • And the Chinese factories are making a lot of Model Y's....which are delivered to all the other parts of the world using the Gigafactory guise.....just like Elooon has made every single cylindrical power cell for every single Model S and Model X in China.

      • Actually, The Model S and Model X are not even made in China. They are made in America in the California factory. All their batteries are made in either the California plant, or Nevada plant. The batteries are manufactured in the Tesla factory by Panasonic in America, by Americans. The Chinese built Model 3 and Y have Chinese built batteries but are distributed to certain parts of Europe and Asia.

    • Lol if GMC can be leading the way of the EV market. Then Ford can be in the lead for EV trucks with 100.

Tesla is cheating with those numbers of theirs.
*As I watch 25+ Tesla's drive pass me*
      Yeah like I said cheating.

  • Come on...I own a Ford Raptor, but I also own a 2021 Tesla model S Plaid edition.
So I'm clearly not a hater.
The Tesla is in incredibly fast, fun to drive, my wife drives it primarily.
However the cyber truck is a joke.
What in all of Tesla's consumer research told them to build that wart?
Zero utility...I mean truck owners are not going to buy that outlier.
Maybe 1st time wanna be truck owners.
There are many great electric trucks coming on line, this ugly wedge ain't one of them

    • too bad your $150K pLAID that Eloon (Evil Loon) loses another $150k for every one he makes cannot even beat a $75K Alfa Romeo 4-door around the Nurburgring.
      PATHETIC.

    • The 3 million reservations disagree w you. Here’s a shocker for you just cause you think something is ugly doesn’t mean others do. Most people wouldn’t buy a raptor and think there a joke including me

    • “What in all of Tesla’s consumer research told them to build that wart?”

      2hrs later……………
      3M reservations.

  • The nice thing about the Cybertruck, the windows are nearly impossible to shatter in case your battery spontaneously combusts and you try to get out with that Chinese flashlight that's got the glass breaking feature.

  • I am goi g to wait for the cybertruck to either be made or not- like most people I do not need a new car and can wait. I totally get that Elon musk may be the greatest charlatan of this generation- making people beta-test software and pay for it, upper the price on this software as if it was even functional- and basically touting a concept car with a prototype as if it were going to happen any moment when it’s year away. BUT, if he makes it happen, it will blow everything else away in terms of range speed and aesthetics- if you are into halo and the apocalypse- which I am. So I’m hoping for the best, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

    • Agreed! We have no need at the moment for the cyber , as we have MS and a gas SUV for our camping needs , but we'll wait as well for This unique Truck that isn't a truck ! I think being different on the road has its advantages as well! Plus the was Tesla drives , is unbeatable ... ;)

  • The cybertruck holds zero interest for me. I do have my reservation for the Lightning. But I hold no grudges against what other people want or buy. If the Lightning doesn't fit your needs, don't buy it. If the cybertruck does if it does eventually become a reality...buy it. A strong market place with diverse options is good for everyone.

  • Tesla and Ford are struggling American companies.

    Are you?

…or just another radical made by the Facebook algorithm that shows you stay glued to what makes you angry. “Company before Country”

    • Tesla is a struggling company? Lmao 🤣 where do you people get this nonsense from? Literally one of the fastest growing company’s on earth and you say there struggling. Up 87% from last years production and there struggling. Wow the bell curve is real.
