Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Mach 4” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Ford Authority has learned.
Filed on February 25th, 2025, under serial number 99055118, this application contain the goods and services description of “Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.”
Rumors of a four-door Ford Mustang have swirled for many years to this point, and in fact, that very concept dates back to a time when the first example of the original, first-generation pony car had even been sold. Back in the fall of 2018, word got out that The Blue Oval was thinking about building a four-door Ford Mustang sedan, and about a month later, Ford reportedly showed such a concept to dealers. Then, in June 2020, a report surfaced claiming that a four-door Mustang was indeed “on the table,” but it was a few years before that rumor intensified.
Then, in May 2024, Ford CEO Jim Farley himself said that he “believes” the automaker could make a four-door Mustang, so long as it has “all the performance and attitude of the original.” A few months later, in August, Ford reportedly showed a number of renderings, mockups, and photos of some future Ford Mustang variants, which included a four-door coupe reportedly called the Mach 4, as well as a lifted, off-road, Baja-style model with rugged tires, an RTR-modified Mustang EcoBoost with a $40k price tag, and a high-performance, V8-powered convertible that looked a lot like the older Shelby GT350/GT500 variants, albeit, sans any Shelby badging. Just this past January, Executive Chairman Bill Ford didn’t rule out a four-door Mustang, either.
As Ford Authority exclusively reported last September, Ford actually created a design study of a four-door Mustang sedan based on the S197 generation model some time ago. The automaker even went so far as to create a full-scale model of this Mustang sedan around 2005, though unfortunately, photos of that model are unavailable, and like all design studies, this was an internal concept that was never shown to the public. Obviously, that model never came to fruition, though now, the reality of a Ford Mustang sedan seems to be as strong a possibility as it ever has been, given the appearance of this new trademark filing.
Does AI even read the news it parrots?

Naturally. Ignore the heart of the market and expand the BoyRacer lineup. What else did you expect?
The best would be to built a real 4 door sedan like the Fusion/Mondeo, but least a 4 door Mustang has much more sense than the Mach-e which definitively is NOT and will NEVER be a Mustang.
A 4 door isn’t a Mustang either since the whole idea was a sporty, euro styled, 2 door. They even knew it wasn’t for families, yet the car was successful for 60 years. Started a whole segment based off of its body-style too. Farley is disconnected from his audience and it is time for a change in leadership.
I think building a 4 door from the Mustang platform, if they are able to do it right, is a great idea. Just don't slap the Mustang name on it. The EV CUV they slapped the Mustang name on is an abomination, they could not have chosen a worse segment to dilute the name on.
John, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if the called it a Mustang-Bronco-St-Line Mach 4.....Then of course throw in a "gotta have it" black package for a reasonable $2,995 which will just swap wheels and badges, which cost Ford no real net difference. If there was ever a company being totally misguided, it's the current FoMoCo.
The 4-door S650 belongs as a Lincoln LS V-8 not a Mustang. Rule 1, you can't have a Lincoln faster or better than the Mustang. Ford is doomed under the current leadership.
"Mustang" Mach E= MINO - Mustang in Name Only...
BFM, That's Big Mistake, if Ford wanted to make a really big splash with the Mustang, make it a larger version like the 1974 still as a 2 door but with enough room in the back seat to accommodate two adults. Gosh what a better idea than an ugly 4 door.
Make Mustang affordable again, oh that's right not profitable enough that's not a good business model.
This car will be so expensive Ford will wonder why it didn't sell. With the standard V8 GT Mustang already over 48k with destination charge the four door will 55k easy.
Beginning of the end for the Mustang that stuck around for 60 years. Sales will just dip even lower in favor of the sedan, then eventually Ford will be like “well let’s just keep the sedan and kill off the Mustang, the sedan still has all the attitude of the original.”
If they do make a Mach 4, I think instead of it being a 4-door sedan, it makes more sense that it will be an ICE 4-door crossover or wagon. Sedans are not selling well in the US. If Ford is going to further drag the Mustang name through the mud, I would rather have a V-8 practical crossover than a sedan; especially if they make a 4-door "coupe". In spite of being 4 doors, the back seats of those "coupes" often have reduced head room.
Everybody saying it shouldn't have the MUSTANG name, you know you're dreaming. Farley has a formula to make Ford AWESOME!! You just take a popular name or badge and slap it all over EVERYTHING! This will allow insane markup. Think of what should have been the reinvented Escape that was dubbed B R O N C O (Sport). Great little CUV, but shamefully watered the Bronco name. And in the process they ruined the Escape. 2 for 1 screw up there Jimmy Boy!! Then my favorite is "ST-Line". The ST was actually growing a good following with the Edge/Explorer so of course we need to water it down. This company is lost!! I just bought my F-150 last month before they finally screw it up.
