President Biden Says UAW, Big Three Need To Work Together

Contract negotiations between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and the Detroit Big 3 automakers got off to a bit of an ugly start after the former called out soaring automaker profits and CEO wages in a recent video, while new UAW president Shawn Fain also refused to participate in the traditional hand shaking ceremony that has kicked off these discussions in years past. Fain has made it clear that he believes UAW represented workers deserve better, and also recently panned a $9.2 billion dollar Department of Energy loan granted to Ford, all while asking the Biden Administration for support in its negotiation efforts. Now, President Joe Biden has commented on this matter, asking all parties involved to put their differences aside and come together to hammer out a new deal.

“As the Big Three auto companies and the United Auto Workers come together – one month before the expiration of their contract – to negotiate a new agreement, I want to be clear about where I stand,” Biden said in a statement. “I’m asking all sides to work together to forge a fair agreement. I support a fair transition to a clean energy future.”

“That means ensuring that Big Three auto jobs are good jobs that can support a family; that auto companies should honor the right to organize; take every possible step to avoid painful plant closings; and ensure that when transitions are needed, the transitions are fair and look to retool, reboot, and rehire in the same factories and communities at comparable wages, while giving existing workers the first shot to fill those jobs. The UAW helped create the American middle class and as we move forward in this transition to new technologies, the UAW deserves a contract that sustains the middle class.”

Thus far, Ford has asked for production flexibility that will allow it to shift workers from one plant to another in the event that the EV transition doesn’t occur as quickly as expected, while the UAW is reportedly seeking a 40 percent wage hike for its workers, along with stronger job security, the end of tiered pay systems, and the return of a cost of living adjustment.

  • Wow. Biden first says I won't get involved. Inflation due to Biden spiked higher than in the last 50 YEARS. Now he has opinion and the UAW wants 46% pay increases (wouldn't everyone? Your social security increase 46%? Anything besides what you pay for?).
Shut all 3 down and see who can lose money. Congrats for building in the u.s. the more employees than any higher (or lower) producing company? Seriously FLAWED in all the wrong ways. Replace them at the government wage (biden) of $15.00 and an hour, buy your Healthcare (Bamacare and drop the b.s. subsidies which screw the middle class), and earn your money on what you have actually worked earned to make instead of some you owe me attitude. Work 30 years at McDonald's and see what you get for flipping a replaceable burger flipper. Uaw needs to get a clue....but if they have any forethought, look at ups. Contract sounds awesome to them (teamsters, not uaw), and that is a death sentence. $170k to deliver a package? Your first class mail just went to $3.87. Unbelievable stupidly. Managementbfor accepting, union short term gain when both go bankrupt. Unbelievable how DUMB both sides are.....

    • Inflation due to Biden? Inflation is worldwide, and the U.S. is nowhere near the top. The U.K., France, Germany, and Japan all have higher inflation rates than we do. Is that due to Biden as well?

      • Inflation in the US started long before the world wide did. Inflation in the US started the day Biden took office and shut down the Keystone Pipeline and then tried to blame inflation on Russia.

    • You cannot reaf correctlu. Biden did not grt imvolved. He judt cslledvour yo both sides to clear their issues. I think you are a anti U.S. agent who does not belive that profits should be shared among workers. I retired from a Verizon branch company thst shared profits among its employees, and those were very good years. That was more of a cooperative workplace.

  • Think these vehicles are expensive now? Now that ol' Sleepy Joe is involved, none of us will be able to afford new vehicles soon. A FORTY PERCENT wage hike? Oof...

  • Biden telling someone they need to joke together?…. What a joke. Kind of like his whole time in office. I certainly want those guys to make a decent living, but I don’t know how much higher these vehicles can go. I almost can’t believe my eyes when I see the window sticker on cars and especially trucks today. It’s stunning! The only vehicle I see that actually looks like it’s priced decently is the Ford Maverick, and that’s why you can’t find one on a lot anywhere.

  • Senile Pinocchio who destroyed the economy giving advice on business decisions? Give me a break. Or better yet, give everyone a break and resign. The only thing that fool has ever accomplished in 50 some years in politics is to get every single member of his family filthy rich off the backs of American taxpayers.
