The Explorer held a 22 percent share, up seven percentage points from the year-ago quarter. The Highlander saw a 19 percent share, down four percentage points while the Atlas saw 10 percent, down one percentage point. The rest of the field each held ten percent or less segment share.
The three-row, large crossover segment contracted an average of 25 percent to 267,561 units in Q2 2022, meaning that Explorer sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
For informational and comparative purposes, we are also providing sales figures for midsize SUV models that overlap with large crossover SUVs like the Explorer – either in price, seating capacity, or both. Despite the fact that these models are physically smaller than the Explorer and its direct rivals, they are often cross-shopped. These overlapping vehicles include:

From here, we can see that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is neck-and-neck with the Explorer in terms of sales volume for Q2 2022. However, the Grand Cherokee is now a family of two vehicles, both of which are all-new. The first is the Grand Cherokee two-row, while the second is the larger Grand Cherokee L with three rows of seating. The former is more of a Ford Edge rival, while the latter is a Ford Explorer competitor. As such, it’s more appropriate to pit Grand Cherokee sales against the Edge and Explorer combined.

Doing so gives The Blue Oval 85,222 combined deliveries, putting it way ahead of the Grand Cherokee family.
Ford Explorer sales saw an impressive increase during the second quarter of 2022. This rise in sales figures is uplifting to say the least, as the Explorer was previously facing a steady decline, first as a result of a rocky launch associated with production and quality, followed by negative repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and by extension, the ongoing microchip shortage. However, it’s clear that The Blue Oval has allocated more supplies to the production of the Explorer in the weeks leading up to the second quarter, enabling the impressive growth.
It’s also worth noting that competition in the large, three-row crossover space continues to heat up as two competing models – the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride – saw healthy growth during Q2 2022. Combined, the duo earned 47,429 deliveries, impressive results for the two newest entrants that were essentially non-existent in this segment two years ago.

I totally agree Nora. I have owned several. I currently have a 2021. It is great. There is plenty of passenger space and lots of luggage space. I consistently get 29-30 mpg on the highway. I hope they will continue to offer this model in years to come.
