Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Ford Maverick sales totaled 13,049 units in the United States during Q3 2022, placing the compact pickup in first place in its segment by sales volume. The Maverick’s only other rival, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, brought up the rear with 8,600 deliveries. In addition, the Maverick posted a higher growth rate than the Santa Cruz, with a whopping 2,478 percent increase for the Maverick to 187 percent.

From a segment share standpoint, the Maverick commanded 60 percent share, compared to the Santa Cruz with 40 percent.

The compact pickup segment expanded 518 percent to 21,649 units during the third quarter of 2022, meaning that the Maverick substantially outperformed the segment.

For the sake of context, below, we’ve provided sales data for midsize pickup trucks. While these pickups technically slot in at one segment above the Maverick, there is often cross-shopping between the two segments.

The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment expanded 14 percent to 145,530 total sales in Q3 2022. Of that, the Ford Ranger accounted for 12,453 deliveries, roughly right on par with that of the Maverick. However, it’s worth noting that Ranger availability is currently artificially constrained as FoMoCo has elected to limit production of the truck at the Michigan Assembly plant in order to facilitate higher production numbers of the Ford Bronco.

The Ford Authority Take

While it’s in a segment with only one other competitor, Ford Maverick sales continued to blow the competition out of the water in Q3 2022. In fact, the Maverick spent an average of six days on dealer lots before being sold in September. Ford’s new compact pickup continues to be a hot seller as demand easily outpaces supply and, as a result, the Maverick continues to be one of the most commonly marked-up new vehicles on sale today.

Interestingly, many Ford Maverick buyers are conquest customers from other brands. Most of those new Maverick owners ditched compact sedans and even crossovers for the compact pickup.

Ford Maverick sales will likely carry plenty of momentum through the rest of the year, seeing as order banks for the 2023 Maverick closed after being open for just one week due to a large number of carryover 2022 orders and a total of 86,000 new ones. Meanwhile, some 2022 Maverick Hybrid orders will now be canceled and pushed to the 2023 model year, as recently reported by Ford Authority.

    • Dealer is a good place to start.

Make sure they gave Ford your email address. If they didn’t question their competence.

  • Another Ford fiasco. One of the few Ford products people want, and nearly 2 years later no increase in production to meet demand . If people have to wait 6-12 months for any Ford product , then time to buy a nice Hyundai off the lot with more features and much nicer interiors

    • i think the 2 trucks target different groups - The Santa Cruz is more of a life-style vehicle while the Maverick is more of a work horse vehicle.

    • I waited 13 weeks for mine when I ordered it 7/19/2021. Owned it a year now. Jumped on the trend early and it was a fast build.

    • i just bought a 2023 santa cruz , very happy with it probably a better ride than the maverick ,which i ordered when the banks were open did not want to wait ,santa cruz is underated the best selling point the warranty ford can,t even get close to that plus i worked out a deal for 5 yr. 60000 mile free maintanence ,plus 5 yr. 60000 bumper to bumper 10 yr. 100000 power train so if you look at it overall hundai is much better deal and yes its a truck and 18'' wheels

  • I was fortunate to get my Maverick hybrid in 8 1/2 months from the time I ordered it but if I would have had to wait any longer especially if I was still waiting I would have bought a Santa Cruz. I am glad I got the Maverick and I like it better but I would not have waited any longer. Toyota plans on releasing a compact hybrid pickup in 2024 so it is time for Ford to step up production because Toyota will not take second place to Ford it will be Number 1 especially if Ford does not up the production of Maverick.

  • Ordered mine 10/11/2021 got a vin number but the build date is now Jan 7 2023, which means it will be pushed to be a 2023 Maverick. Shure hope I can order it when the time comes.
