Ford Mustang sales decreased 16 percent to 12,258 units during the second quarter of 2022, placing second in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume. The Doge Challenger took first place with a three percent drop to 14,558 units, followed by the Mustang in second and the Chevy Camaro in third, with a 63 percent increase to 4,545 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Mustang saw a 39 percent share, down six percentage points from the year-ago quarter. The segment-leading Challenger saw its share flat year-over-year at 46 percent, while the Camaro grew its share five percentage points to 14 percent.
The two-door muscle car segment contracted nearly four percent to 31,361 units, meaning that Ford Mustang sales underperformed the segment average.

The lower Ford Mustang sales volume during Q2 2022 was the result of subpar availability, caused by lower production volumes as a result of various supply chain constraints. These constrains include but are not limited to the ongoing microchip shortage, which was initially brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, it’s worth noting that FCA Stellantis appears to be offering higher incentives on the Dodge Challenger, thereby making its Mustang rival more affordable. Incidentally, the current-generation Challenger is expected to end production in 2024, while the Mustang will be overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered) for the 2024 model year.
Code-named S650, Ford’s new pony will represent the seventh generation of the iconic nameplate. The 2024 Mustang is expected to enter production in early 2023, bringing about an all-new exterior, brand new interior, and all sorts of modern technologies. Meanwhile, the 2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L Coyote V8 engines will carry over from the current generation, at least at launch.
It’s highly likely that Ford will ramp up production of and incentives for the current-gen, S550 Mustang during the final two or three quarters of its lifecycle in order to ramp up sales and make room for the next-generation model. In doing so, we expect Mustang sales to steadily increase in the near-term, as The Blue Oval adjusts its sales strategy to incorporate the pony car.

One has to think that supply chain issues although not one-for-one would be pretty close for all three brands, maybe the uptick in Camaro sales is due to its impending death? Get the last ones! As far a Challenger sales go, I haven't compared models in terms of equipment packages to see who is perceived as the better value, but even though they compete in the same segment, their respective focus is different...Challenger more straight line oriented, and Mustang more road course of twisties oriented, attracting a slightly different customer base.
owned mustangs since i was 17. finally got sick of ford's subpar cost cutting and went challenger. couldn't be happier. no it's not perfect, but no misaligned body panels, no strange interior rattles, stronger manual trans, better engine (albeit heavy) and actually useable back seats. oh and far far better looking. it could very well be possible that i don't know, people think the current mustang is just ugly and less practical and not quite as well performing as its rivals.
Well, as a recent recipient of a 2022 Mustang Convertable, I can say regardless of the numbers, it is one fine sports car. The Camaro or Challenger was never on the table for consideration. No concerns, complaints or regrets. Hopefully Ford continues to value the Mustangs place in history and ensures its longevity. Doubt if I have time or inclination to purchase another one down the road, couldn't imagine parting with the one I waited 45 years to get! Sales will come when the production stabilizes.
People just not buying muscle cars like they use to . Supply chain is factor but not single car broke 20k in sales . Just tells me the muscle car is on the way out.
Muscle cars were out in the 1970's then held through the 80's-90's with the Mustang and Camaro. Each generation comes and goes with any vehicle. Is baby boomers launched the craze but as we married and kids along the way, two door sports cars just didn't fit. Well now retired I was able to buy a Camaro, awesome vehicle. 17 years ago a new generation picked up on the Mustang and then Camaro relaunched in 2010 and the Challenger. The newest generation of car buyers fell in love with them plus retires finally were able to buy their dream cars. Those who bought these vehicles have grown up and large SUV 's now fit the family. It be a long day if retirees traded in a Camaro for another one. When the new Mustang is launched for 2024, it will attack a new generation of buyers and the cycle will continue.
Give Incentives And The Buyers Will Come - Ford dealers are running good customers to other brands with their long delays on orders, poor dealer/customer relations and the obscene above market sell price on these vehicles. And done get me started on the endless recalls on every segment of vehicles that Ford makes. Ford thinks customers are dumb sheep and will just keep coming back to slaughter. The customer is much smarter these days as money gets tight
I just looked at a 22 Mach 1 that was 65,000,and they added another $12,000 dealer Mark up and the the asking price was over $67,000 retail.. Now we're talking Shelby Gt500 money.. It's no wonder the Challenger is out selling the Mustang for that kind of Crazy money...
The base GT is pretty bare bones now. Have you seen the center screen? It's the size of a 1976 calculator screen -- for $40kplus. Nevertheless, I'd buy one because I want a base GT for the engine, but not at that price. If Ford wants to sell more mustangs, they just need to lower the price on the base GT and get some cars in various colors in dealerships.
