The healthy, 101 percent increase in Ford Expedition sales volume during the second quarter of 2021 results in the nameplate remaining in second place in its segment, behind the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.
To note, the “regular” Expedition is a rival to the Tahoe, while the extended-length Expedition Max goes up against the Suburban. Treating the Tahoe and Suburban as a single vehicle (the way Ford does with Expedition and Expedition Max) gives Chevrolet 41,281 combined deliveries, roughly 16,000 more than the Expedition (see running Chevy Tahoe sales and Chevy Suburban sales).
The Expedition outsold the remaining segment contenders, including the GMC Yukon family (see running GMC Yukon sales), as well as the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia, In fact, Ford outsold its Japanese competitors by a significant margin.
It’s worth noting that all six models in the segment experienced sales volume growth during the quarter. The GMC Yukon posted the largest increase of 126 percent, thereby slightly closing the gap with the Expedition in terms of total sales volume.

Combining sales of all GM offerings in the segment – the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon – gives Ford’s cross-town rival a 65 percent segment share, compared to 25 percent for the Expedition.
The full-size SUV segment expanded 91 percent to 99,980 units in Q2 2021. As we mentioned above, that means the 101 percent growth in Expedition sales slightly outpaced the segment average.
The 101 percent increase in Ford Expedition sales during Q2 2021 gives the Expedition a healthy 25 percent share of the U.S. mainstream, full-size SUV segment, a very lucrative space. That 25 percent is an increase of a single percentage point over Q2 2020.
Impressively, the Expedition managed to increase its market share by one percentage point despite being outsold by offerings from FoMoCo’s cross-town rival, General Motors, whose Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon (and Yukon XL) posted similarly-impressive growth rates as the Expedition. To note, the 2021 Tahoe, 2021 Suburban and 2021 Yukon are all-new and have generally garnered positive critical acclaim.
Luckily, Ford has recently announced the updated Expedition that will launch for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Expedition will feature revised front and rear fascias, along with a revamped cockpit and a lot more technology.
A standout feature of the interior changes is the addition of the huge, vertically-oriented SYNC 4A display from the 2021 Mustang Mach-E and 2022 F-150 Lightning.
Additionally, the 2022 Expedition refresh introduces the rugged Expedition Timberline model as well as the Expedition Stealth Performance Package, both powered by the high-output version of the Ford 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.
