The 35 percent drop in Ford EcoSport sales during the first quarter of 2022 place the small crossover in 11th out of 19 rivals in its competitive set. First place was secured by the Honda HR-V, which saw sales rise 61 percent to 42,168 units. The Jeep Compass followed in second with a 22 percent increase to 24,408 units, while third place was taken by the Nissan Kicks with a decrease of 16 percent to 20,577 units. The rest of the segment contenders each posted less than 20,000 deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the EcoSport accounted for four percent, down one percentage point from the year-ago quarter. By comparison, the HR-V secured 21 percent, up 11 percentage points while the Compass earned a 12 percent share, up five percentage points. The Nissan Kicks saw ten percent of the segment, up one percentage point, and the remaining rivals each earned eight percent share or less.
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 26 percent to 202,328 units during Q1 2022, meaning that EcoSport sales underperformed the segment average.
The EcoSport has been the target of some criticism in recent years, potentially leading to its less-than-noteworthy sales performance during Q1 2022. In fact, Ford has announced that it will discontinue the model in mid-2022 as a result of the automaker’s decision to cease manufacturing operations in India, including the Ford Chennai Assembly Plant where the EcoSport is built.
However, FoMoCo still introduced a few changes to the 2022 Ford EcoSport in spite of its impending discontinuation. Headline-worthy changes include the discontinuation of the 1.0L EcoBoost I-3 engine from the lineup, making the atmospheric 2.0L I-4 the crossover’s sole engine option. Additionally, all-wheel drive has become standard across the board. Notably, these changes have resulted in price increases across all trims.
It’s also worth noting that, even though the Ford EcoSport will no longer be sold in India and the U.S., FoMoCo has said that it will continue to produce the crossover at the Ford Craiova Assembly Plant in Romania for the European market. The EcoSport will likely be replaced entirely with the Ford Puma in most global markets. In fact, Ford Authority has caught the Puma testing on U.S. soil in April 2021.

As long as Ford's only engine choice is ecoboost, I will be looking elsewhere! Why would Ford get rid of the dependable 2.5 Duratec? Probably because it will run forever with little problems. I would much rather have that than an ecoboost that has 2 fuel pumps (low pres. and high pres.) a turbo that can get me down to the next red light faster, and direct injection that leaves the back of the intake valves to carbon up, and with no Ford approved way to clean them! .....no thanks!
