The two full-size, body-on-frame Ford SUV models – the Ford Expedition (and Expedition Max) plus the Lincoln Navigator – experienced growth during Q1 2021.
MODEL | Q1 21 / Q1 20 | Q1 21 | Q1 20 | Q1 21 SHARE | Q1 20 SHARE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
FORD EXPEDITION | +12.50% | 22,263 | 19,790 | 82% | 84% |
LINCOLN NAVIGATOR | +26.29% | 4,832 | 3,826 | 18% | 16% |
TOTAL | +14.73% | 27,095 | 23,616 |
The Expedition outsold its Lincoln stablemate, with 22,263 deliveries for a 13 percent increase in sales. Despite the increase in sales volume, the model saw its segment share decrease one percentage point from 27 percent to 26 percent during Q1 2021.
The Lincoln Navigator, meanwhile, led the Expedition in terms of growth rate, posting an increase of over 26 percent for 4,832 units. The luxury SUV’s segment share remained stable at 24 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.
Ford SUV sales performance for Q1 is respectable considering the duo is facing strong competition from its cross-town rival, General Motors. The market is reacting very favorably to GM’s revamped SUV portfolio, with every nameplate experiencing strong growth in sales volume. This feat is especially impressive given the obstacles caused by COVID-19 complications, as the virus and associated pandemic delayed the launch of the redesigned vehicles.
By contrast, FoMoCo seems to be managing through the ongoing microchip shortage for the time being, as its full-size SUVs do not seem to be heavily impacted by the development. More good news is on the horizon, as the 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to boast a refreshed exterior and updated tech, while also adopting the Ford 3.5L PowerBoost V6 as an optional powertrain. The updated SUV is expected to arrive later in 2021 as part of its mid-cycle action refresh.
The Lincoln Navigator will also receive several updates for the 2022 model year, consisting of a revised exterior with new front and rear fascias and a revised interior with a large screen that’s different from the vertically-oriented screen set to be used in the 2022 Ford Expedition.
Most recently, Ford Authority observed the 2022 Lincoln Navigator base trim for the first time ever. Before that, we first spied a prototype of the refreshed 2022 Lincoln Navigator last October wearing heavy camouflage. Since then, we exclusively detailed the 2022 Navigator’s new infotainment screen, spied it testing alongside the previous-gen Cadillac Escalade, caught both the interior and exterior of the forthcoming 2022 Lincoln Navigator completely uncovered, and exclusively reported that the Navigator will be available with Lincoln ActiveGlide, the brand’s BlueCruise equivalent that enables hands-free driving.
Moving forward, we expect Ford SUV sales to continue to remain healthy, followed by steady growth as the newer models are rolled out.
